Choosing the right external glazing

Nowadays, a wide range of glazing for building facades has been developed. Good glazing properties are important because they control the amount and quality of daylight and amount of solar heat gain let into the building.

   Visible Transmittance

  • Describes the percentage of visible light that passes through a glazing unit 
  • COOL-Lite Extra clear has maximum VT = 71% 

  

   Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) 

  • Measures how much of the incoming heat from sunlight gets transmitted into the building
  • Especially important in hot sunny climates
  • COOL-Lite ST 108 has the minimum SHGC = 0.1 
  • LEED requirement: SHGC < 0.348 

 

   Thermal factor U-Value 

  • Measure the rate of heat transfer per unit area 
  • Unit: W/(m2K) 
  • COOL-Lite with 16mm Argon has minimum U-values = 1.0 W/(m2.K) 
  • LEED requirement: U < 2 W/(m2.K)
